I am so sad to hear of Paul’s death. He was my first Pupil-Master (along with Peter Nathan) when I started at the Bar in 1985. He taught me a trick or two then that are still valid today. And he practised what he taught. Prepare well, speak fairly & honestly without fear or favour, be ready for the surprises. This latter included being ready for a decent lunch if by a stroke of luck the case concluded early. Or one time heading out to track down a prize rug for his new house (I think it was for the drawing room where he played piano.) I recall watching him spar happily with judges, colleagues and witnesses and, we enjoyed some very fine curry-lunches when at Woolwich. A traditional advocate who embraced the newer ideal of mediation. Whilst I have only seen him once or twice since those days it is still a shock and sadness to know that one of the founding teachers and mentors for my career has passed away. My grateful thanks to him and condolences to his family.
